Creating multi-subject multi-factorial data sets

Author: Rainer Goebel

Goal. The "GroupDataSimulator" plugin allows to quickly generate multi-subject data. Working with simulated data is very useful for testing complex multi-subject analysis tools while knowing for sure where specific activation effects are located. By controlling the amount of noise in the simulated data, one also knows how difficult it is for hypothesis-driven and data-driven tools to detect the "hidden" activation patterns. The first release of the plugin focuses on generating data for multi-factorial designs allowing to test RFX GLM and ANOVA models with between (group) and within (repeated measures) factors. Generating data with “ideal” activation patterns may also be helpful to investigate the number of subjects needed to obtain significant random effects results with different methods under various conditions going beyond standard power analyses. It might also be instructive to compare results obtained with simulated data with the results from measured real data using the same analysis steps and visualization tools. Furthermore, simulation of complex experimental data may play an important didactic role: If one is able to successfully analyze simulated data of a planned experiment, one should have learned everything necessary to successfully analyze also subsequently measured real data.

Requirements. The plugin requires version 1.8 or higher of BrainVoyager QX. In addition, a GDS (Group Data Simulator) text file must be available (see below) specifying the design for which data should be generated. Furthermore, a VMR file in Talairach space is required. The VMR file and the GDS file should be placed in a (empty) folder, which will receive the generated data.

Running the plugin. To start the plugin, load the Talairach VMR file and then click the "Group Data Simulator" entry in the Plugins menu. The program will then ask for the GDS (Group Data Simulator) text file. Select the prepared file and click "Open" or quit the plugin by pressing "Cancel". The program reads the text file and generates multi-subject data according to the specified experimental design. The Log window will report about the progress of data generation.
