Import GIFTI file format to BrainVoyager
Via the first option in the main menu one can import a GIFTI surface file to BrainVoyager.
First you will be asked to select the GIFTI file.
When the intent of the file is NIFTI_INTENT_POINTSET (extension mostly *.surf.gii), the GIFTI file will be converted to a BrainVoyager surface model (*.srf). Importing a GIFTI surface mesh does not require the surface module to be open in BrainVoyager.
During the import process, a message box will ask whether a reversal of the winding is necessary. This refers to the storage order of the triangles. For most files, it is necessary to do this. It does not take much time.
If the intent is NIFTI_INTENT_TIME_SERIES (extension mostly *.time.gii), the file will be converted to a BrainVoyager mesh time course (*.mtc). And when the intent is larger than NIFTI_FIRST_STATCODE and smaller than NIFTI_LAST_STATCODE (extension is usually *.func.gii), the file will be converted to a BrainVoyager statistical surface map (*.smp). For time series and statistical surface maps, it is required to have opened the surface (*.srf) in BrainVoyager.
The data are saved in a file with a similar name and a BrainVoyager extension. A surface file is written to disk and can be opened manually after importing. Imported mesh time courses (*.mtc) and statistical maps (*.smp) can be viewed directly. The imported file is located in the same directory as the original GIFTI file.
A report of the import process is printed to the BrainVoyager QX Log tab (see figure below)(the logtext refers to a different imported file from Caret than the figure shown above).
